Female Friendships Vital to a Woman's Overall Well-Being

A few weeks ago, I drove up to what appeared to be an empty house about 7 p.m. The lack of cars in the front should have given it away, but I still got out of my car, walked up the drive clutching my book and a large bowl of gourmet chocolate-covered popcorn. I peered in through the sliding glass doors. Nothing was stirring. I pulled out my cell phone and called a friend.

"Book club doesn't meet tonight, does it?" No, it was the next night, my friend explained, and we had a good laugh. "If I were showered and dressed I would meet you for a drink," she offered. "That's OK," I said. "I'll see you tomorrow night."

How pathetic I must have looked when I slumped back into my kitchen a mere 20 minutes after having left for an evening out with friends. My husband was just putting dinner on the table for the kids. "What happened?" he asked. I explained, and he gave me a hug and a plate of chicken fingers and frozen corn.

About mid-afternoon the next day, my husband came into the study, where I was working on the computer.

"You're already dressed to go," he noticed. I was wearing linen, which I only wear when I'm going out. I stared at him over the rims of my purple reading glasses. "You really need a night out with the girls," he said, and went about his business.

He was right.

My book club of five years meets monthly, and if I'm lazy about my friendships, it's the only time I spend with the girls. As was the case last month, I become like the parched earth, thirsty for any drop of adult female companionship. When book club rolls around, I want to laugh as I can only laugh with other women. I want to commiserate with and have deep, meaningful conversations with every woman in the room. I want to get down on the floor and learn the latest Pilates move. …
