Shola Can Scale the Heights Says Toon Coach Craig

Newcastle's Shola Ameobi today linked up with the England Under-21 squad along with United teammates Michael Chopra and Darren Ambrose, (writes Miles Starforth).

David Platt's side face Serbia and Montenegro at Hull City on June 2 and Slovakia at Sunderland's Stadium Of Light on June 10.

And while Platt's ex-Nottingham Forest player Jermaine Jenas is now a fully fledged member of Sven-Goran Eriksson's senior squad, United are still well represented in the Under-21s with Chopra having received his first call-up.

Striker Ameobi, who scored eight goals last season for Newcastle, is the most experienced of the Magpies trio at both club and international level.

And Magpies reserve coach Tommy Craig, who has worked with Ameobi since he was a raw teenager from the club's academy, believes he has come on leaps and bounds over the past season, having added strength to his natural ability.

"The season before last season there was a doubt in some people's minds about his strength," said Craig. …
