An exhibition of imaginative childhood memories by North East artist Jason Skill goes on display at a Newcastle arts centre this weekend. Rachel Filby finds out his secret of re-creating childhood emotions

Jason Skill is known for his dramatic large-scale seascapes, but in his latest exhibition, he abandons this familiar work to revisit his childhood.

The Emperor's New Clothes, at Newcastle Arts Centre, is an exploration into childhood memories, incorporating feelings of fear, hope and joy from an adult perspective.

Jason's use of watercolours in this exhibition is aimed, he says, at connecting the viewer with feelings, sights and dreams from their own past.

Jason explains: "It is easy to forget the joy and fear you felt when climbing a tree, or the complex stories and ideas that filled your mind as a child."

The work contains images associated with childhood and the honesty and vulnerability which accompany this time of life. …
