It is still tight at the top of the Foster's Northumberland Tyneside Senior League. Several sides are close to leaders Lanchester and second top Newcastle City, who both won at the weekend.

Despite a half century from Stephen Ball, Sacriston made only 153 at Lanchester for whom Banda with 5-29, continues to impress in his first season.

Andrew Donnelly led Lanchester's winning reply scoring 43 to put his side four points ahead of Newcastle City.

Ashington struggled at home to Newcastle City who won by eight wickets. Massood Mirza was economical and although Simon Prudhoe, Ross Sample and David Rutherford all passed 30 the Colliers hit 146-8 in 50 overs.

Mirza carried his bat for 69 forming partnerships with Imran Shah (31) and Sohail (30 not out).

Tynedale, who went into the programme in third, lost by 31 runs to Swalwell. Jason Dumighan top-scored with 68 for the winners before Stephen Humble turned in a match-winning performance with the ball, taking seven wickets for 26 runs.

Kevin Penny hit an unbeaten 113 but finished on the losing side at Leadgate who met the target of 256 when Gary Innes and Sean Ackerman both struck half centuries. Father and son Donald and Philip Brown were prominent in Shotley Bridge's win against Backworth.

Donald claimed four wickets and Philip scored 60, which together with 51 from David Jackson and 46 by Dominic McCabe put the Bridge into a strong position at halfway.

David Nevin (63) and Gary Christie, with 38 not out, paved the way for a six-wicket victory for Lintz at home to Annfield Plain. Bruce Armstrong was another player to make 50 in the Plain side.

Consett, hoping to make an immediate return to the top flight, moved into second in Division A2 with a 53-run win over Kirkley at Blackfyne. Gary Hunter (47), John Walker (43) and Ian Stoneman with 42 not out took Consett past 200. …
