Jobs pledge: one hundred new jobs were promised as Gary Lewis Care Centres, of Tyneside, announced the building of two new homes at Darlington. North Park Grange is expected to open on July 21 with the second, in the Hunden's Lane area, due to open in late autumn. Each will employ around 50 people.

MARLOW DEAL: MONTAGU Private Equity bought Stokesley-based Marlow Foods, the maker and distributor of the meat substitute Quorn, from AstraZeneca in a pounds 70m deal. Marlow, which also has a depot at Billingham, employs 340, has an pounds 80m turnover and makes a range of chilled and frozen foods.

AIRLINE TALKS: AIRLINE bmi British Midland said talks on closer co-operation with competitors would not scupper a new deal it has made with Teesside Airport, described by airport managing director Hugh Lang, left, as one of the most significant developments in the history of the airport. The agreement will see the launch of a number of new services from this autumn and from next spring the airline will be offering a further range of destinations when it will base two aircraft at Teesside. …
