Moya Michael: Mixed bill Purcell Room

MOYA Michael is a young dancer with Akram Khan's small troupe, and last night she presented her first evening of original choreography. It was, by any standard, an impressive debut, not only for its ingenuity, but also for its allure. Few fledgling dance-makers are this consistent, and fewer still beguile the senses and hit you in the solar plexus all at the same time.

The evening was actually a bit of a hybrid - three short pieces, two of Michael's made for children, then a solo by fellow South African Gregory Vuyani Maqoma, whose dancer she coached. And last, a longer piece from Michael that reads as her choreographic calling card.

Hatch, as in hatching out, is a 30-minute piece of pure dance that looks unlike anything you have seen before. I should qualify that with "probably", because there are references (no one springs from nowhere), but Hatch feels fresh and new and, at times, like an alternative movement system. …
