'Greedy' Mayor Attacked over Greenwich Rebuild

THE redevelopment of the Millennium Dome and surrounding Greenwich peninsula has again been put into jeopardy as the land's new owners described as "greedy" London Mayor Ken Livingstone's last-minute calls for an increase in affordable housing allocation.

Livingstone has called for the percentage of affordable houses for key-sector workers to be increased from the 35% set aside in planning permission already granted by Greenwich council to 50%.

Robert Burrows, chief executive of Australian-based developer Lend Lease, 51% owner of the Meridian Delta joint venture behind the rebuild, threatened to call the whole thing off.

He said: "It's an interesting game he [Livingstone] is playing. I think he is just being greedy. He may find he gets no affordable housing."

Greenwich gave its outline planning consent in April for the building of 10,000 new homes, the first key stage in a redevelopment of 190 acres of land. …
