The House of Lords was being asked today to back a Bill allowing a terminally-ill adult to choose medical help to die, within strict safeguards.

More than 50 peers were taking part in a marathon second reading debate on the Patient (Assisted Dying) Bill, introduced in February by crossbench peer Lord Joffe.

Lord Joffe's Private Members Bill would allow a competent adult to request medical assistance to die if suffering from a terminal disease or incurable illness.

D-Day tribute

AROUND 300 British D-Day veterans were in France today to remember fallen comrades on the 59th anniversary of the historic Normandy landings. The veterans were paying respect to the heroes who gave their lives in history's biggest military invasion, which helped to liberate Europe.
