Floods and Hail Batter the North

Flash floods and giant hailstones brought chaos to parts of the region last night.

The village of Lanchester, between Consett and Durham City, was among the worst hit as storms left it under several feet of water while the hailstones formed piles of ice in gardens.

Four fire crews with pumps were sent to the village with both the Queens Head and Black Bull pubs reporting flooding.

The fire service estimated around 40 homes in Lanchester were affected, along with shops and parked cars, and last night villagers were beginning a mopping-up operation.

Traffic was diverted away from the village as firefighters worked to pump away as much of the water as possible.

Retired publican Pauline Lammin, 62, from Mount Pleasant said: "The water just gushed in through the back door and the hailstones covered the garden. Carpets and furniture are ruined, I've seen nothing like it."

Outside Mill Cottages, firemen were pumping several feet of water which had flooded residents' homes. …
