Eastgates Sheep Show in Weardale introduced a new class for other breeds and it was a Texel that beat the traditional classes of Swaledales, Blue Face Leicesters and North of England Mule Sheep to take the overall championship at Banners Field on Saturday.

The home bred Texel Tup lamb shown by local farmer David Scown from Ireshopeburn took the Maddison Memorial Trophy as the overall all breeds champion.

Mr Scown who runs mainly Swaledale sheep on his hill farm, started breeding pedigree Texels six years ago and now has a 20-strong flock from which he produces fat and breeding lambs. After two years under the shadow of foot and mouth, the homely Eastgate event attracted a large entry, and the sunny weather ensured a big crowd.

There was pounds 2,000 prize money on offer in 45 classes. "It's a good day for drinking beer" said perspiring show secretary Paul Collinson.

Colin Martin of Eastgate took the George Arnold Jopling Trophy for the champion Swaledale with his Gimmer Shearling, which was also judged reserve overall champion.

The North of England Mule Champion, a Gimmer Hogg was shown by Martin and Val Brown of Newton le Willows near Bedale.

Their winning animal was bought at Hawes last year as a Gimmer Lamb.

Show president Bill Wearmouth of Eastgate won the Blue Face Leicester class with his home bred Gimmer lamb.

Wearmouth also won a new trophy, the A J Jopling Memorial Cup, for his Tup lamb.
