A search was underway along the Northumberland coastline yesterday for a missing council official.

Police, family and friends are baffled as to why "devoutly religious" Terry Robson, town clerk and solicitor for Spennymoor Town Council in County Durham, has gone missing.

Mr Robson, 55, left home in North Close, Kirk Merrington, Spennymoor, at 7.30am on Saturday, after writing a note to tell his wife, Valerie, that he was going to his allotment in St Paul's Gardens.

She searched the allotments, becoming worried because he is a diet-controlled diabetic and had not eaten.

His wallet, mobile phone and passport were left at home and he was not carrying much money.

His car was found on Sunday morning in Alnmouth, and police believe he might have visited the priory there.

They said he was a regular visitor to both Alnmouth and Lindisfarne priories, where he would go to meditate.

Yesterday, the Northumbria Police helicopter was searching the coastline. …
