A top financial decision maker will be heading for Teesside Business School at the University of Teesside later this year to deliver its annual lecture.

Kate Barker, who is a member of the Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee, will be the keynote speaker at the event on November 20.

Ms Barker is one of nine MPC members who meet each month to set the UK's interest rates.

Prior to her appointment she was chief economic adviser at the CBI - Confederation of British Industry.

And she is no stranger to Teesside. She visited Teesside Business School in January 2002 to deliver a talk entitled "Aspects of Monetary Policy" and visited local firms and students during her trip.

On her last tour of the area she admitted making the monthly interest rate announcement was a "big responsibility".

"Changes in interest rates affect everyone," she said. "The first time I sat down to do it, it was unnerving. You take those two days extremely seriously."

The Bank of England monetary policy objective is to deliver price stability and, without prejudice to that objective, to support the Government's economic policy including its objectives for growth and employment. …
