Sir Alex Ferguson could snatch Cameroon star Geremi from under Boro's noses.

There are strong reports today that Sir Alex wants to take the Real Madrid midfielder to Old Trafford as a replacement for David Beckham.

Geremi was not included in the pounds 25m deal to sell Beckham to Real Madrid, but it is claimed that Manchester United are ready to negotiate a separate pounds 9m deal with the Spanish club.

In fact, initial discussions are said to have already taken place.

Geremi, 24, proved his Premiership ability during his year-long loan spell with the Boro. He scored some great goals and was very creative.

The African star has already stressed that he would like a permanent move to England, and would be happy to play for Boro if he could not earn himself a permanent place at Real Madrid.

Spanish officials said earlier in the summer that Geremi could stay and fight for a first team place, but the first team door at the Bernabeu is completely closed following Beckham's transfer to Madrid.

Now Geremi, who is preparing to play for Cameroon against Brazil in the Confederations Cup in France tomorrow, has revealed that a move to Old Trafford would suit him perfectly.

He said: "After Real Madrid, United are the team I'd choose above all others.

"Alex Ferguson has had many good things to say about me and not every footballer can claim that."

Boro were keen to keep Geremi and made a written bid of around pounds 3m as soon as the season ended.

However Real Madrid turned down the offer and placed a fee of pounds 9.6m on the midfielder's head.

It's a valuation of which Boro chairman Steve Gibson said: "We will not pay and cannot pay."

Steve McClaren is already looking at other options and will bring in a wide player before the start of the new season.

He has inquired about Barcelona winger Marc Overmars, but is likely to have been put off by an inflated asking price.

McClaren has also inquired about West Ham's England international Trevor Sinclair, who is available for under pounds 3m.

This is a more realistic target and Boro could harden up their interest with a written offer. …
