Evidence Grows That Saddam Is Hiding in Iraq

AMERICAN intelligence officials say they have increasing evidence that Saddam Hussein is still alive.

Despite two massive air attacks targeting him at the start and end of the war in Iraq, communications among the dictator's supporters in recent days are said to suggest that Saddam survived and is in hiding.

Intercepted messages from the Fedayeen paramilitary group and Ba'ath party intelligence officials now operating under cover include "credible discussions" that indicate "the former Iraqi president is alive and must be protected", the New York Times reports today.

US officials say the messages suggest that Saddam has not fled abroad, but is hiding with supporters where he feels safest.

The hunt for the dictator is being stepped up, headed by Task Force 20, a secret military organisation that includes members of the US army's Delta Force and the CIA working with crack navy counterterrorism-By James Langton in New York squads. Failure to capture-Saddam or produce evidence of his death is said to be a major factor of the growing resistance in Iraq that has seen more than 50 US soldiers killed since the end of the war in early May.
