Sculptures were at the centre of a cash row today.

The work by Stephen Cox, Nigel Hall and Charles Hadcock is being displayed in the grounds of Durham County Council's offices at Aykley Heads as part of a two-year art project.

The first piece in the pounds 55,000 project, Yatra by Stephen Cox, was unveiled earlier this month.

But there were complaints that the council was being insensitive by splashing out at the same time as announcing plans to close 23 schools because of lack of cash.

Independent councillor John Shuttleworth said: "Staff have been contacting me saying this is a waste of money. It is highly insensitive. The pounds 55,000 could have been put towards the schools."

A spokesman for public sector union Unison said: "I have been in talks with one school where teaching assistants are being made redundant. The money for this arts programme would have saved their jobs."

But Durham County Council claimed the project had been agreed at a council cabinet meeting last July. …
