Sometimes - all too rarely - life falls beautifully into place.

Early summer sunshine flickered through the branches of the lakeside trees, before sparkling on the water, and the cheery gossip and laughter from a wedding party drifted on the warm breeze.

The roach were obliging and the float dipped at regular intervals and for at least the next hour I knew that this blissful existence would continue uninterrupted.

The reason for that was that Pat was immersed in a massage and manicure, and would be as happy as I was with my fishing.

Suddenly it dawns on you why you work - so that you can afford to let the hazy, lazy days of summer drift by without a care in the world.

Even when it was time to stir, there was the leisure club including gym, swimming pool, sauna, Jacuzzi and tennis court to work up a healthy appetite, with an excellent dinner to follow in an award winning restaurant overlooking the lake.

It doesn't get better that this, and it's on offer for anyone who cares to take the relatively short drive from Teesside to Chevin Country Park Hotel, on the southern fringe of the Yorkshire Dales.

It's an unusual hotel, built of wood, mostly large rounded logs, pleasing to the touch and eye. Much of the accommodation is in lodges scattered around the 50 acre grounds, rustic looking from outside, but with all mod cons within.

Ensuite facilities, trouser press, tea and coffee facilities, hairdryers, television, are all included to ensure a comfortable stay.

We were impressed with the set up, though it may not be to everyone's taste.

If you like to be in a town centre with hustle and bustle all around, or seek the sort of grand, historic country retreat complete with sweeping lawns, the Chevin may not be for you.

But if the idea of a weekend surrounded by nature - deer roam the grounds - in a comfortable and very different hotel that blends into its surroundings, is what appeals, then you'll have to search far and wide to find anything better. …
