A restaurant in Durham is being blamed as the source of a salmonella scare which hit more than 130 people.

The city restaurant, which has not been named, has been given as the likely source of the potentially fatal food bug in May.

A total of 131 people were affected by the outbreak, with 11 needing hospital treatment.

Environmental health officers from Durham City Council are considering whether to prosecute the restaurant owners.

In a statement they said they were satisfied that control measures had been put in place to prevent further outbreaks. The restaurant was closed but is now trading again.

A council spokesman said: "The first thing we had to do was make sure we removed any possible health risk to the people of Durham.

"We did that by rapid intervention and by checking that any suspect premises had a clean bill of health.

"Once we had made sure everything was safe we could concentrate on any possible enforcement action. …
