Calendar pokes fun at rundown streets in Gateshead after losing bid for top honour

Jokers have produced a tongue-in-cheek calendar packed with photos showing the worst of Gateshead.

The 2004 calendar pokes fun at the town and buildings and asks why Newcastle Gateshead missed out on the capital of culture title.

The front cover asks: "Did the judges visit Gateshead Town centre?" beneath a picture of the famous multi-storey car park.

Beside each picture is a cheeky comment taking the mickey out of the town.

February's picture shows a no parking sign painted on the back yard wall of run-down flats in the town centre.

Beside the picture is a quote from Keith, Gateshead, which says: "An example of contemporary street art in Gateshead, not to everyone's taste. But yours to view only 400 yards from the Baltic Arts Centre."

May's snapshot is a decrepit curry house which has been closed for years.

While December features a montage of shots from around the town. …
