Sport, especially on the stillwaters, has been rewarding with warm water temperatures encouraging most species to feed.

Almost all stillwaters are currently at their prime with Whittle Dene providing small perch at "a fish a chuck" and Eden Meadows, the Big Waters and Easington's Shotton Pond also producing the goods.

Alan Smith, of Consett, reported one 4lb 12oz barbel from the Wear and two others lost from a swim near Bishop Auckland and the Tyne at Wylam yielded a 4lb-plus dace bag for Ian Stewart.

But the consistent River Tees is still the in-form river with five double figure nets recorded from the Croft area in midweek.

The first Yarm AA match of the season got off to an encouraging start on the Tees, won by Derek Fox with a 21lb 5oz catch that included three chub of 2lb-3lb.

On Catterick lakes, a water stuffed with small carp, Darlington's Alan Brain netted 32lb 9oz to win Sunday's match.

The Dissington midweek match was won by Nigel Ripley with 5lb 13oz. …
