Q I am worried about my three-and-a-half-year-old son. He seems very chubby, even fat, although he wasn't like this as a baby. We have a tendency towards overweight in our family, and I am always trying to lose weight, as is my husband. But we are never very successful. Both my parents are overweight, and we all like our food. I don't want my son to grow up with a weight problem, and maybe suffer bullying the way my husband did at school.

I know my son has a good appetite and he has no strong dislikes for anything in particular. In fact, he eats most things with enjoyment and it is a pleasure to prepare meals for him. Other parents have the opposite problem, I know - trying to get food into children who are picky.

Now, though, it is obvious he is a lot bigger than most children his age. He is tall as well, and I have to buy clothing to fit a six year old.

People tell me not to worry, that he will lose it as he gets older, but I want to take action now.

A It's true your son may change as he gets older, but we do know that many habits of eating and exercise are set in childhood, even toddlerhood, so it's good you are thinking about what you can do now.

Research shows overweight pre-school children differ from their non-overweight peers not so much in the food they eat, but in the exercise and activity they do every day.

It would help a lot if you incorporated more action in your son's routine. …
