Michael Openshaw bounced back to winning ways to smash the course record in last night's Patterson Ford-sponsored Tynedale 10k Road Race at Ovingham, (writes Bill McGuirk).

Competing in a field of nearly 600, Openshaw's eagerness to do well was rewarded with a time of 29min 48secs, knocking 23 seconds off the old record set in 1991 by Kevin Forster.

"I needed a confidence- booster," said Openshaw, who was also 27 seconds quicker than when he won the event last year.

"I've had a couple of disappointing races recently so I needed to show some decent form and I'm quite pleased with the way I ran." The downhill start quickly sorted out the leaders, with Morpeth's Terry Wall the only one to stay in contact with Openshaw passing the first mile.

"You tend to get carried away in the early part of the race - last year I struggled to go the pace with Stewy (Bell) - but once the course levels out you start to settle down," added Openshaw, who will compete for Birchfield in the British League this weekend. …
