The world's greatest footballer could soon be making his Newcastle debut - courtesy of a Tyneside art business.

Hebburn-based online art gallery, Eyestorm, wants to bring Pele to the city to promote a new collection of photographs of the Brazilian legend which the company has commissioned.

Pele has already made personal appearances at showings of the collection in London and Manchester and now Eyestorm chief executive Don Smith wants to give Tyneside a chance to see the great man in the flesh.

South Shields-born Mr Smith said: "I would love to bring Pele up here, it would be great for the area which, as everyone knows, is so passionate about football.

"The chances of getting Pele to Newcastle are very good. We just need to find the right partner to sponsor the exhibition and we need the right venue to stage it. If we could manage to do that, I could definitely get Pele up to Newcastle and we could definitely have an amazing event."

The pictures of Pele have been taken by some of the world's leading contemporary photographers and were shot in a range of locations including London, Los Angeles and his native Brazil.

They were commissioned by Eyestorm as part of a project the company is carrying out with world football ruling body, FIFA, to have the world's best 100 footballers photographed by the world's best photographers.

A book featuring the images is due to be launched next year to mark FIFA's 100th anniversary with the release of the Pele collection this year acting as a curtain raiser.

The collection features 14 pictures of the legendary goal-scorer from photographers including Tearney Gearon, Ralph Gibson and Juergen Teller.

It features stills from his playing days and striking modern-day portraits, all of which are for sale as limited editions. …
