Controversial plans to turn a Stockton hotel into homeless accommodation have been refused after dozens of nearby residents objected to the move.

A petition of more than 70 signatures was handed to the council protesting against the change of use of the Sheraton Hotel in Yarm Road.

G&S Accommodation, which also runs hostels in Middlesbrough and Redcar, had hoped to provide bed and breakfast for homeless people, without altering the appearance of the building.

However, nearby residents of Parkfield feared the hostel would cause increased noise and disruption.

Those signing the petition believe "there are enough of this type of property causing problems in the area" and said they were sick of being "dumped on".

G&S Accommodation claimed there would be 24-hour supervision at the hostel, which would mainly provide rooms for people aged between 19 and 34 years.

"Anyone found with drugs paraphernalia would be instantly removed," said the company. …
