Warren Hughes shrugged off criticism from British Touring Car Championship rival James Thompson as he prepared for his home race at Croft this weekend.

The Sunderland-based racer and his MG Sport and Racing teammate Anthony Reid were accused of being "desperate people doing desperate things" following the last two rounds at Rockingham.

Hughes had came home eighth in round one and later in the afternoon he forced his way to third, at the expense of Vauxhall works driver and current champion Thompson.

But Hughes has hit back at Thompson, believing the Yorkshireman is feeling the pressure as team-mate Yvan Muller is leading the BTCC after 10 rounds.

"There was a free-for-all and I was desperate to win, I'll admit that," said Hughes. "I imagine James was the same.

"I just think he's got niggled by the fact that his team-mate is winning on a regular basis. He should focus more on himself as we certainly weren't barging people off the track. …
