South Shields athlete Jared Deacon must realise his huge potential if he is to challenge for 400 metres honours, says Roger Black.

Deacon will be one of a host of talented British 400m runners competing for honours at the Norwich Union Super League in Gateshead on Sunday.

Deacon has spent the last month trying to prove to selectors that he is worthy of inclusion following a moderate beginning to his summer season and this weekend he will get the chance to show what he can do.

Former Olympic 400m silver medallist Black knows how hard it is to get to the top and he says Deacon - whose personal best is 45.57 seconds - has a lot of work ahead of him if he is to make the final breakthrough.

"Jared is one of these athletes who has been knocking on the door for the past six or seven years, but what he really needs is two things, more consistency and to find about half a second."

Deacon, whose season's best is 46.47 seconds, will have a tough task on his hands in Gateshead, when he lines up against world champion Avard Moncur of the Bahamas and Commonwealth champion Michael Blackwood of Jamaica, who has run 44. …
