Fernandina Man Wins Kingfish Tournament; Nassau: 34 1/4-Pound Fish Earns Him $20,000 Prize

When it comes to fishing, David Bowers of Fernandina Beach is king.

Bowers bested fishermen from 237 other vessels to win the 21st annual Nassau Sport Fishing Association kingfish tournament last weekend in Fernandina Beach.

The long, silvery fish reeled in by Bowers, captain of the Takin It Easy, was caught June 27, the first day of the tournament. Weighing in at 34.24 pounds, the fish earned Bowers $20,000.

While seas were smooth June 27, the afternoon of June 28 was a different story. Thunderstorms rolled in, seas were up and lightning damaged some equipment when it struck the tournament site, according to tournament organizer Rick Langford. In spite of Sunday's forecast for rain, there still was a good turn out for the awards ceremony and community fish fry, he said.

This year's tournament yielded the biggest payout ever, with more than $75,000 in cash and prizes, Langford said.

Though participants netted a load of prizes, they weren't the only winners in this year's tournament. …
