Jacksonville police continued searching yesterday for a man who made off with a squad car after a crash on Interstate 95.

Police were searching on the Southside, but the suspect had not been found by late yesterday.

The man is wanted for grand theft, resisting arrest and operating a vehicle with a suspended license, according to a Jacksonville Sheriff's Office report.

Officer J.R. O'Steen was investigating a one-vehicle crash near the Beach Boulevard exit of I-95 when he parked his car behind the crashed one about 9 a.m. Saturday. After checking for road debris or any other vehicles involved, the officer turned back. He found the car and the suspect gone.

Shortly after 11 a.m., the car was found behind the rectory at Blessed Trinity Catholic Church, 10472 Beach Blvd., locked up and emergency lights flashing, the report said. The suspect also falsely identified himself as someone else, but that person later identified the suspect for police.

Bruce H. Grove Jr. is being treated at the Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach while an officer monitors him, Leeper said.

Deputy Charles Sease, 35, was the county's first deputy killed in more than 70 years, a spokeswoman said.

Sease was putting spikes across Interstate 95 at a Palm Coast exit when a car driven by Grove struck him, police said. …
