French favourite the Xantia became an instant hit on the used market when Citroen replaced it two years ago with the C5.

Always a smart choice anyway, it took on fresh appeal when a 2.0 HDi diesel engine arrived relatively late in the model's lifecycle.

This direct injection unit replaced the old 2.1TD and was heralded by Citroen with claims of "improved economy, more flexible torque, lower emissions, quieter running, greater refinement and better performance".

And they were right - the Xantia HDi not only returns markedly better fuel consumption than a similarly powered petrol engine, but also 30 per cent better economy and lower CO2 emissions. And it doesn't sound like an oil-burner.

Xantias have always been distinctive, and for those wanting a comfortable, relaxed ride, pleasant interior styling plus space for the family, this is a smart choice.
