Worried Mother Tells Court of Fears for Child's Future Health Care

In a statement before the court, the mother, from east London, described how her 10-year-old daughter had repeatedly been admitted to hospital with breathing problems.

Despite this, she had continued to develop, although slowly, and attended a special school.

She had severe learning difficulties but could say a few words and walk short distances with support.

She could recognise people, understood what was going on and enjoyed school, swimming, listening to music and watching TV.

Last October the girl, identified as N, was admitted to the Royal London, where a chest infection developed into pneumonia. A week later her breathing stopped.

The mother said she called nurses who began to resuscitate her daughter while other medical help was summoned.

A doctor asked her to go into a side room with one of the nurses, where she was told N was dying.

The mother said she asked for N to be put on a ventilator but the doctor refused, saying the child was suffering and asked whether she wished this to go on. …
