An adopted Geordie is taking a priceless souvenir back to Russia - a Tyneside accent.

Roman Stepanov will be trying out phrases like `Haway the lads' on pals back home in St Petersburg when he goes back home next week.

The Newcastle-mad 25-year-old has been in the region for the past three years studying a degree in International Business at Newcastle University.

Roman, who stayed with former Lord Mayor Les Russell and his wife Yvonne at their home in Fenham, is returning home after graduating with first class honours.

He said: "I will miss Newcastle and things like fish and chips which is not a speciality in Russia. Nobody has ever heard of it there.

"I have tried Newcastle Brown Ale which I think would go down very well in my home town.

"I am not surprised I have picked up the Geordie accent because I have been living with a true Geordie."

Roman's stay in Newcastle stemmed from the Tall Ships Race in 1993, when his father, Vjacheslav, came to the region on his small ship. …
