Woman Charged with Burning Corpse to Fake Death; She Tried to Avoid Court, Police Say

A South Carolina woman who authorities say tried to stage her death last year by putting a skeleton in her vehicle and setting it on fire was arrested in Jacksonville on Thursday.

Sandra Grice, 37, of Dillon County is charged with improper desecration of human remains, arson and violation of federal probation, Marion County (S.C.) Sheriff Billy Page said.

The suspect wanted officials to think she was dead to avoid appearing in court on federal charges, Page said.

Grice initially was arrested on drug charges and was being sought for failure to appear after violating a federal bond agreement in South Carolina, said Assistant U.S. Attorney Brian Kane of Jacksonville.

Other details about her arrest in Jacksonville weren't immediately available. Grice is in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service and will be returned to South Carolina, Kane said.
