Skipper Ian Somerville admits that Blaydon's comprehensive victory over champions Benwell Hill has eased the relegation pressure on his side.

Blaydon bowled Benwell Hill out for just 112 and lost just two wickets in their reply to take 20 points, giving themselves some breathing space as the relegation battle hots up in the Foster's North East Premier League.

They are now 34 points clear of basement club Norton and Somerville believes Blaydon are capable of notching more wins before the end of the season.

"It was an excellent result," said Somerville. "But when you travel to last year's champions you expect a harder game than the one they got, although they were missing a few players, including Phil Nicholson.

"We played well and they weren't up to scratch on the day. The wickets were shared around as well and Johnny O'Neil has been a revelation since being brought in from the second team.

"He's not played for Blaydon for a while but he made a difference on Saturday. …
