Faldo's Open Dilemma Is All about a Labour of Love

Nick Faldo can picture the scene. Six shots clear in the Open with a round to play and the phone rings.

It is his wife Valerie. "Sorry dear - I've just gone into labour."

So now what does he do? Stay for glory or go home for baby?

Faldo would love to find himself in that position come Sunday. The labour bit could definitely happen and the three-time champion does not rule out the part about him leading either. Though maybe not by six.

The third Mrs Faldo is heavily pregnant with their first child. She is due in two weeks, but the couple have been told she could give birth at any time.

"Everything is going well, so I just told her to sit still," said Faldo, who is 46 on Friday.

"I don't want her jumping around and going out to mow the lawn or anything."

Asked what the instructions would be if he is in contention for the title he replied: "Sit very still and don't even put the telly on."

Faldo stated two weeks ago that if he receives news of an imminent delivery he will pull out of the championship to be at her side. …
