Six per cent of hospital patients had to wait in casualty for 12 hours or more to get a bed or room, according to a survey published today.

Just over half of the 95,000 patients questioned by the Department of Health were admitted to hospitals during 2001 and 2002 as emergencies, with the remainder admitted directly to wards from waiting lists.
