A multi-million pound cash battle has erupted over the bill for work on the troubled Sunderland Metro extension.

Tyne and Wear Metro operator Nexus is at loggerheads with Network Rail, which claims it is owed pounds 28m for work carried out during the network's Wearside extension.

The exact amount already paid to Network Rail as main contractor is unclear, but if the former Railtrack's claim is upheld the cost of the extension could soar to pounds 128m.

Nexus management are confident they will not have to pay the extra money, with director general Mike Parker saying the claims cannot be substantiated.

It's understood Nexus is making its own claim against Railtrack for delays in the completion of the showpiece extension opened by the Queen in May 2002.

Yesterday a spokesman for Nexus said: "The note which accompanies our annual accounts is clear and I think it's fair to say that due to the complex nature of this matter, we are not in a position to comment. …
