Newcastle United will pick up pounds 500,000 for taking part in the Asia Cup.

But there are no big prizes for the team that comes out on top among United, Chelsea, Birmingham City and the Malaysian national side.

Neither the Premier League, under whose auspices the tournament is being run, or top Asian television station ESPN, who are sponsoring the event, are prepared to talk about money.

However, I understand the English teams will each receive pounds 500,000, although I'm told that it's a case of "peanuts" for the winners and next to nothing for the runners-up.

It was generally accepted that the reason for the three Premiership clubs making the long trip out to Malaysia was for financial gain, both from taking part in the competition and the commercial spin-offs to be gained from promoting themselves in the vast and lucrative Asian markets.

Yet, Chelsea could have stayed at home after all as they are now rolling in the stuff following the appearance of Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich at Stamford Bridge. …
