The Message from New Graduate Left Paralysed in Diving Accident

A determined student paralysed from the neck down in an accident was celebrating today after achieving his degree.

David Beckett, 22, was an active 14-year-old when his life was shattered by a diving accident.

But despite losing the use of his arms and legs, he was determined the injuries would not ruin the rest of his life.

Now his strong spirit has shown through as he has graduated from the University of Teesside with a 2:1 in Social Sciences

David, from Darlington, who is now planning to do a Masters degree, said: "My advice to anyone in similar circumstances is don't give up. There is help available and nothing is beyond you.

"I aim to take my academic studies as far as I can."

David passed six GCSEs while he was being treated in a spinal unit in Southport.

Then he gained four A-levels at Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form College in Darlington.

And he has many interests outside his studies. …
