Asia Cup Ties Were Worth the Weight for Andy

Andy O'Brien was in seventh heaven here today - even though he has lost seven kilos throughout the Asia Cup, (writes Alan Oliver).

The Republic of Ireland international defender was the only Newcastle United player to play a full 90 minutes in both games against Birmingham City and Chelsea.

And he was delighted that in those two games United only conceded one goal - a penalty given away by fellow central defender Titus Bramble.

O'Brien, who underwent an operation in the close season for the broken nose he suffered in the derby win at Sunderland in April, said today: "I'm pleased I got to play in both games, even though I lost a combined seven kilos in the matches.

"It's not something I wanted to do, because I am a skinny lad anyway!

"Despite playing in those two games my fitness is not quite at the stage where I want it to be, but when we get home we've got games coming thick and fast leading up to our Champions League qualifier. …
