If you can't afford nearly pounds 27,000 for an Audi TT Coupe fear not, for Seat has introduced an alternative costing virtually pounds 9,000 less.

The new Leon Cupra R 225 shows just what a hefty premium people are prepared to pay for image, as in the case of the Audi TT Coupe 225.

Sharing the same 1.8-litre engine, the Leon also has a close ratio six-speed gearbox, and nips to 60mph in under seven seconds, with a 150mph top speed.

It has just gone on sale at pounds 18,000, which is an increase of pounds 1,000 over the previous 210bhp version, and is distinguished by its new Cupra badging in red.

Although it faces tough competition from renowned rivals such as Honda's acclaimed Civic Type-R at just pounds 16,000 and the pounds 16,675 Astra GSi Turbo, Seat is claiming that the Leon offers more power per pound.

By simply dividing the prices by the power figures, the company has come up with figures of pounds 80 per PS for the Civic and Leon, pounds 83. …
