A drink driver who killed a pensioner in a hit and run crash is hoping to rebuild his life as the owner of Tyneside's trendiest new bar.

Duncan Fisher is the brains behind The Apartment, in Newcastle, which sells bottles of Dom Perignon vintage champagne at pounds 980.

But today he told of the shame he feels after leaving 84-year-old John Waters for dead after he ran him over in October, 1998, in Shieldfield, Newcastle.

Fisher was jailed in July 1999 for three-and-a-half-years, which was reduced on appeal to two years, after Mr Waters' family wrote a letter of support.

Fisher, of Abbott Fisher Accountants, in Sandyford, Newcastle, has just opened The Apartment, in Collingwood Street, in the same building as his former business, Hooties American Diner and Cabaret Cafe, which went bust.

Hooties was placed into compulsory liquidation by Leeds County Court, in September 2001, on a Customs and Excise petition for pounds 9,956 of unpaid taxes. More than pounds 14,000 was owed to other creditors.

Another company run by Mr Fisher, Town and Country Roofing (NE) Limited, was placed into compulsory liquidation in June 2000 on a Customs and Excise petition for pounds 9,319 of unpaid taxes.

The Official Receiver completed the winding up of both of the companies last year.

A father-of-one, Fisher said: "Five years ago I was guilty of an horrific crime, for which one man paid the ultimate price by losing his life and I will never forget it.

"My family went through trauma as did John Waters' family who I was in touch with and who were absolutely superb.

"I brought shame on my family and I have worked hard since I came out of prison to make them proud of me.

"Hooties and the other business got into trouble while I was in prison. Everyone did the best they could to keep it running but it was difficult. …
