Customs officers have seized almost three quarters of a million smuggled cigarettes from Teesside Airport.

They seized half a million cigarettes from a single flight in a dawn swoop on Saturday and 171,000 from two flights last week.

Mike Connolly, head of detection for customs in the North of England, said: "This is one of the largest single seizures from one flight in the country this year.

"These are not holidaymakers returning with more than their allowance, these are organised criminal gangs who are targeting provincial airports.

"At Teesside Airport this week we have seized nearly three quarters of a million cigarettes from three flights from the Canary Islands.

"These customs successes are as a direct result of the flexible deployment of resources to address identified risk.

"My message to those who try to beat the system is: 'Just because you do not see a uniformed officer every time you pass through the controls does not mean we are not watching you'". …
