Now It's Up to the Players to Deliver the Goods at Boro

After two years of tweaking and tinkering at the Riverside Stadium, Steve McClaren is under enormous pressure to deliver success to Teesside this season.

Fans who have become accustomed to mediocrity are desperate to see his efforts bear fruit; yet a frustrating summer for the Middlesbrough manager doesn't bode particularly well.

Last season promised much, but Boro, at times regarded as genuine contenders for Europe, faded badly.

And McClaren, determined to further strengthen his squad for a renewed challenge this time around, has found it difficult to attract the big names he feels he needs. After Geremi opted to join the Chelsea revolution, Boro quickly missed out on the likes of Trevor Sinclair and David Dunn, while Real Madrid's Flavio Conceicao pulled out of a season-long loan move in order to link up with Borussia Dortmund instead.

The acquisition of Doriva has done little to capture the imagination of supporters. …
