She then caused a stir in the title role of Bridget Jones's Diary. Many wondered how this Texan of Swiss-Norwegian descent could possibly play London girl Bridget. But play her she did and with such skill that it only took seconds to forget she was an all-American girl with a strong Texan drawl.

She's now an A-list celebrity who gets sent scripts in the post. At first she resisted reprising the role of Bridget Jones, but changed her mind when offered more than pounds 15m to appear in The Edge Of Reason. It dwarfs the pounds 2.5m she received for the first film.
