* LITTLE BAY 228 Belsize Road, NW6 (020-7372 4699) Mostly North Mediterranean seasoning with the odd couscous dish, Little Bay and its sister restaurants, in Exmouth Market (also Little Bay) and Dalston (LMNT), were started by the famously good-looking Serbian, Peter Ilic. The food, for the price, is super-confident. I rest my case with braised pig's cheek with garlic-and-parsley mashed potato.

Ilic was famous in the Eighties for opening Just Around The Corner, the gaff where you pay what you think the meal is worth. He is the pioneer of the new school of good value restaurant in London. They have just gained their first Michelin mention, not bad for a place where you can easily eat (sans wine) for under a tenner. Ave per head [pounds sterling]20.
