A former firefighter had a battle on his hands when he sailed back in to Hartlepool this weekend.

Three months to the day since Mike Fellows, from High Grange, left to sail around the country, he arrived home, in the midst of a terrifying storm.

Mike, 55, a keen sailor for 30 years, said it was the worst weather he has ever sailed through.

"On Sunday I was sailing from Sunderland and I got a call from a friend at the coastguard station telling me about the storm and to put my sails down," he said.

"I was only a couple of miles from shore when the lightening started, striking the sea just a few hundred yards from around it. It was amazing because you could hear the water boiling, but it was frightening."

Mike took to the seas when he retired from Stockton Fire Station after 28 years' service. …
