Every year I diet madly in preparation for my holiday, only to put it all on while I'm there. How can I stop this happening but still let my hair down and have a good time?

There are two implications I'd like to address. First, the inevitable consequence of short-term, and I assume pretty stringent, dieting. And the second implication of your question is that you can't enjoy yourself on holiday unless you're almost binge eating

Let's tackle the first issue. If you look around you and question yourself honestly, you have to conclude that if you're still doing diets and yet still have weight to lose, then diets don't work. If you look at the diet books on sale today, you'll see an increasing number giving the message that diets make you fat. And they certainly do over time. Yes, you lose weight in the short term on some insufferable regime and you may get a high when you see the weight go down in the first couple of weeks. But then the inevitable happens"You snap. You're tempted and you just can't resist. Then, of course, once you've blown it, you can't stop. So you promise yourself that you'll start again tomorrow (or after your holiday). The problem is, of course, that tomorrow never comes.

As you're discovering, you're expecting too much of yourself. We can put up with deprivation for only so long.

Now on to the holiday aspect. You set off on holiday proud of your achievement, but nevertheless reeling from deprivation and looking forward to all the goodies that will be available on holiday - exciting food that you might not even have to cook yourself. You deserve a treat or three. But, again, the inevitable happens. You blow it big-time. And now it's "with permission" as you're on holiday. You're on the way to piling on again all the weight you lost before your trip. …
