Q. How soon is it possible to tell I am pregnant? I have irregular periods and I can't work out from my dates. I have been feeling more tired than usual, and I have experienced some feelings of sickness in the mornings. I did a pregnancy test and it showed negative.

I am hoping I am pregnant, but I am scared to hope too much in case I become disappointed.

A. The best thing to do is simply to take another pregnancy test. To be honest, having had one negative result probably means you aren't pregnant, but sometimes, the level of pregnancy hormone in the urine in very early pregnancy is not high enough to register as positive on the test. So if you continue having symptoms, and no period, then try again. Other early pregnancy symptoms include tender breasts, and changes in smell and taste.

Q. My three-year-old has a very sweet tooth, and his favourite foods are high in sugar. He also likes burgers and fish fingers, and turns his nose up at healthier food. When he was younger he was very fussy and faddy, and I just went along with whatever he would eat, as I was scared he would end up eating nothing. I was told not to make a fuss and just to give him what he liked best. He was quite underweight, and I found the easiest way of coping was to serve up his favourites and leave him to it.

Of course, his favourites turned out to be high fat, high sugar foods and now, he eats very well. …
