Children in some of Teesside's less well-off areas are to benefit from a new road safety initiative aimed at cutting accidents.

Middlesbrough and Redcar and Cleveland Councils have each been awarded pounds 90,000 to set up the scheme to earmark deprived areas where most accidents take place.

Councillor Eric Empson, lead member for strategic planning for Redcar and Cleveland Council said the cash would "undoubtedly help save lives."

And Cllr Dave Budd, executive councillor with responsibility for transport on Middlesbrough Council, added: "This has already been running in Middlesbrough and the new funding will enable a further ten schools and 800 children to benefit.

"The scheme has gone down well with children and - importantly - also with adults."

The cash will enable councils to employ staff to train and support volunteers.

The volunteers will then go into schools and teach children key road safety skills, including how to cross between parked cars and where to cross safely near junctions. …
