Important Changes in the 3 Series

Article excerpt

There are some important changes, and a small price rise, in store for BMW's 3 Series models. Significantly for company car users, modifications to the two-litre diesel engine mean that from September the tax liability will fall by three per cent.

This affects the 320td Compact, 320d Saloon, 320d Touring and the recently announced 320Cd Coupe.

The not so good news, however, is that there will be a price rise of pounds 220 on each of these models, although it does not apply to ES variants or the 320Cd which arrives in September. Prices for the new diesel Coupe will be pounds 24,310 for the entry level model, and pounds 26,620 for the Sport variant.

Other 3 Series changes include a window anti-trap mechanism for 3 Series Convertibles as standard, and an optional dual-band fixed telephone to replace the GSM unit, adding Orange and T Mobile to the range of service providers.

A universal remote control will be introduced as an option to replace up to three remote controls used to operate garage doors and driveway gates, on all 3 Series models.

New 16-inch alloy wheels will be standard on the 325ti SE Compact, with 17-inch double spoke light alloy wheels offered as an option on all Compact models. BMW is riding high on the crest of a wave of success, which looks set to continue with the arrival of the new 5 Series models.

On sale from 18 September, the new 5 Series features new lightweight chassis components, increased performance, ground-breaking levels of technology, higher levels of standard specification and more space than the outgoing 5 Series.

Prices are pounds 25,455 for the 520i SE, pounds 30,955 for the 530i SE, and pounds 30,950 for the 530d SE

The three launch models will be joined in October by the 525i SE at pounds 26,955, and the range-topping 545i SE costing pounds 41,555, at which time the 520i SE automatic and a Sequential Manual Gearbox for the 530i SE and 545i SE will also debut.

Not only does the new car cost less to service than its predecessor, it also comes with the option of Service and Maintenance Inclusive (SMI). …
