Paul Collingwood and Steve Harmison both knocked loudly on the door of the England selectors last night as they helped Durham Dynamos claim a second successive National League victory.

The win over the Sussex Sharks was achieved with nine overs to spare thanks - despite a late wobble when both Gary Pratt and Philip Mustard got themselves out - to an efficient team display in the space of three balls.

While the win gives the Dynamos real hope of moving out of the bottom five and facing a first-class county in the first round of next season's Cheltenham and Gloucester Cup, it was also the perfect stage, in front of the live TV cameras, for Collingwood and Harmison to shine.

Collingwood, playing in only his third match of the season following his recovery from a dislocated shoulder, was the strokemaker in a third wicket partnership of 88 with Ashley Thorpe which laid the foundations for victory.

The pair steadied the Durham ship after Martin Love and Goldsmith's Player of the month for August, Nicky Peng, were both back in the pavilion with just 14 on the board.

Collingwood, two days after being dismissed for 48 against Hampshire, will have been annoyed at not turning his 45 into at a half century. But the quality of some of his strokes was enough to re-establish his reputation as one of England's leading one day performers.

And Harmison's hopes of winning an instant recall to the Test side for the fifth and final Test against South Africa at Lords next week will have been strengthened by his equal best National League figures of 4-43.

That gave Harmison, who admitted he had been angry at being left out of the side for the fourth Test last week, seven wickets in two National League games and proves his fitness to the England selectors. …
